Reading Di Tian Sui Chan Wei · Connecting the passage

When does an intermediary really connect two opposing forces

An intermediate element only provides a bridge when its strength and position allow it to connect both sides.

关内有织女,关外有牛郎;此关若通也,相邀入洞房。

— Di Tian Sui, “Connecting the Passage”

The verse pictures two lovers separated by a barrier. A passage lets them meet. In a chart, 通关 means an intermediary that turns an effective controlling relationship into a useful sequence of generation. Simply finding that intermediate element does not establish the passage.

Identify what the bridge must accomplish

Metal controls Wood, but Metal can generate Water and Water can generate Wood. Water therefore provides a possible connection. The other sequences follow the same reasoning: Fire between Wood and Earth, Earth between Fire and Metal, Metal between Earth and Water, and Wood between Water and Fire.

Ren Tieqiao calls this drawing the controlling force into a connected route. Its usefulness depends on the needs of both ends. Which side is excessive? Which needs support? A bridge with nowhere useful to lead is not a remedy.

For poorly supported Jia Wood under heavy Geng Metal pressure, effective Water Resource may receive Metal and support Wood. Geng is Seven Killings, 七杀; Water is Resource, 印; Jia is the Day Master. This is the relationship called Killings generating Resource and Resource supporting the self.

A demanding workplace helps explain the life interpretation. Standards and assessment become manageable when the organization provides training, tools, and experienced guidance. Pressure passes through those supports and helps a person perform. More assessment without that support leaves the essential passage unfinished.

The bridge needs strength and access to both ends

A rooted Metal force may exceed what rootless Water can receive. Seeing Ren or Gui Water does not by itself mean the pressure has been transformed. Too much Water can also leave Wood unable to receive its support, requiring a separate examination of Earth and Fire.

Placement matters as well. Ren points out that visible Killings with visible Resource, or hidden Killings with hidden Resource, can show a clear connection. When one is above and the other below, when they are distant, or when an active obstruction lies between them, explain how the relationship actually reaches its destination.

Transparency, 透干, means a hidden stem appears as the identical visible stem. Rooting, 通根, means a visible stem finds support within a branch. Shared elemental identity does not make these two facts interchangeable.

Earth Wealth close to Water Resource may damage a bridge that otherwise supports Wood. The next question is whether Wood can restrain that Earth or Metal can receive Earth and feed Water. A combination involving Water likewise requires examining its effect. Water cannot simultaneously be treated as removed and as fully supporting Wood.

A connection can strengthen the wrong side

If Metal is already weak and Wood excessive, Water draining Metal and feeding Wood can worsen the imbalance. It occupies the intermediate position in the generating cycle, but it does not help this chart. Some controlling relationships are useful and should remain effective.

Strong Jia with modest Earth Wealth may benefit from Fire Output draining Wood and feeding Earth. Weak Jia with already heavy Earth Wealth may suffer additional depletion from exactly the same Fire. The Wood–Fire–Earth sequence is identical; the capacity at each end differs.

First establish the conflict that needs relief, then identify a capable intermediary. Memorizing the five bridges cannot replace that judgment.

Luck periods repair passages and alter the banks

Where heavy Killings lack Resource, a period bringing rooted Water can favor training, credentials, and institutional support if Earth does not damage Water and Wood can receive it. Where Resource exists but Wealth damages it, a period controlling that Wealth may restore support before any career advancement is inferred.

If Resource is already sufficient, more Water may over-support the Day Master. If Fire connects Wood to Earth, Water may suppress the bridge and interrupt production or income. A period's stem and branch can also work differently: the stem might feed Resource while the branch clashes with its root.

The practical advice follows the working passage. Use training and qualifications to meet demanding responsibilities when Killings–Resource cooperation is effective. Turn skills into deliverable, payable work when Output connects to Wealth. When the bridge is damaged, repair support and working arrangements before increasing obligations.
