Reading Di Tian Sui Chan Wei · Source and flow

Where the five phases begin and where they come to rest

Find where the chart's strongest flow begins, where it is interrupted and whether its destination is useful.

何处起根源?流到何方住?机括此中求,知来亦知去。

— Di Tian Sui, “Source and Flow”

The verse asks where a sequence begins and where it stops. Knowing the generating cycle is only the beginning: Wood does not necessarily have enough strength to feed Fire, and Fire does not necessarily reach Earth. This chapter examines an actual route through a chart.

Find the source before tracing the flow

Ren Tieqiao calls the strongest effective presence in the four pillars the source, 源头. It may be Wealth, Authority, Resource, Output, or peers. It need not be the Day Master, nor the element that appears most often.

Seasonal command, roots, visible stems, and supporting companions explain how strength gathers. Several visible stems without usable roots do not automatically govern the arrangement. Once the source is identified, trace the elements it can actually generate.

Consider well rooted Jia Wood with substantial peer support. Wood may form the source. Effective Bing or Ding Fire can receive its production; Wu or Ji Earth can then receive Fire. For Jia, this is peers feeding Output and Output feeding Wealth.

A small production business offers a useful comparison. Staff are the starting resource, a finished product is the middle stage, and payment is the endpoint. A large team that finishes nothing, or finished products that never bring payment, do not establish a successful business. Return from the comparison to the chart: does Fire have support, does Water suppress it, and can Earth Wealth remain available rather than being divided by peers?

A useful endpoint matters more than a long sequence

Ren's instruction to keep generation flowing is followed by “a good conclusion,” 收局得美. The ending determines whether the route is useful. Wood generating Fire and Earth may be favorable when Earth Wealth serves the arrangement and the Day Master can sustain it. If Earth then feeds already excessive Metal pressure, extending the chain can make matters worse.

Authority generating Resource and Resource supporting the Day Master also requires interpretation. For a weak Day Master under heavy Authority pressure, Resource can transmit that pressure into support. For an already strong Day Master with excessive Resource, the same sequence may drain Authority and prevent responsibility from being exercised effectively.

The chart does not need every element or a complete circle of generation. Identify the source, follow the route that works, and ask what the endpoint helps. Adding another stage may dissipate something that was already useful.

Locate the obstruction precisely

Water close to Fire may block Wood's intended outlet. Fire without roots may fail before it can generate Earth. An important stem tied by a combination, or two actors separated by an effective intervening influence, can also interrupt the route.

In an Output–Wealth arrangement, Water Resource suppressing Fire Output directs attention to skills, expression, or finished work that cannot develop. If Fire reaches Earth but peers compete for Earth Wealth, the concern shifts to payment, ownership, and distribution.

These require different responses. Chasing invoices cannot solve unfinished work; producing more cannot settle unclear ownership. Even a remedy needs examination. Authority that controls competing peers may itself become excessive. Earth that restrains obstructive Water may feed harmful Metal. Opening one passage should not remove another necessary support.

A luck period can complete or interrupt the route

If Wood is abundant and Fire weak, a period bringing supported Fire can strengthen Output, provided Water does not suppress it. Where Fire and Earth already work together, added Earth draws attention to orders, earnings, and the Day Master's capacity to carry them.

Missing Fire arriving in a period creates a source of support for existing Earth. Water arriving in an established Fire–Earth sequence may instead damage that source. Merely recording a new element misses the difference.

The practical direction follows the blocked stage. Skills without a market call for sales and delivery. Revenue that cannot be retained calls for clear contracts and collection. Abundant resources without finished results call for clear responsibility and fewer competing demands. Source, transmission, and useful destination must connect before the traditional reading has a definite direction.
