Geng Metal through the seasons
Follow how Geng Metal's needs for shaping, moisture and an outlet change from month to month.
五月丁旺而烈,庚逢败地,专用壬水,癸又次之。
十二月寒气太重,丑为湿泥,愈冻愈寒,先用丙火解冻,次取丁火煅金,甲木亦不可少。
— Qiong Tong Bao Jian, “Geng Metal in the Fifth Month” and “Geng Metal in the Twelfth Month”
The familiar image of Metal refined by Fire can suggest that Geng always benefits from Fire. Yet the summer passage prioritizes Water, while deep winter distinguishes Bing warmth from Ding refinement. Those differences carry the argument.
Warming and refining are different functions
For Geng, Bing is Seven Killings, Ding is Direct Officer, Ren is Eating God, and Gui is Hurting Officer. These names describe their relationships. Warming Metal, refining it, controlling excessive Fire, and moistening Earth explain what those relationships do in a particular season.
Early spring's lingering cold brings Bing warmth into consideration. The first-month passage also considers Jia loosening thick Earth. Geng still needs roots, peers, or suitable Earth support to sustain the arrangement; additional Fire is not automatically beneficial simply because Metal is weak.
Xu Lewu distinguishes modest Earth supporting Metal from excessive Earth burying it. Earth is Resource for Geng, but its name does not guarantee usefulness. Jia Wealth restraining excessive Earth can help Metal function. “Wealth damages Resource” therefore requires identifying whether that Resource is needed or excessive.
As spring advances, Ding's refining role becomes more prominent, with Jia feeding Ding. Strong Officer acting on weak Geng calls for support that can transmit Fire through Earth into Metal. Rooted Geng with useful Officer can instead be read through training, standards, and responsibility.
Summer Water needs roots and a source
Strong summer Fire places greater pressure on Metal. The fifth-month passage prioritizes Ren, then Gui. Water restrains Fire and moistens Earth, potentially helping Earth support Metal. Water drains Geng as Output but may also protect it in this arrangement; weak Metal does not make every Output presence unfavorable.
A tiny, rootless Water presence facing abundant Fire and Earth may be ineffective. Examine Metal supplying Water, its branch roots, and Earth controlling it. The book's phrase 元武, the northern Water image, refers here to Water's function rather than an extra spirit indicator.
If a complete Metal formation gives Geng substantial strength, the emphasis may shift toward Ding's restraint. Complete Si–You–Chou differs from Si and You alone. Excessive Ding again raises the need for effective Water. Summer Metal does not turn every Water arrival into a benefit or every formation into permanent preference for Fire.
Autumn asks how strong Metal receives useful restraint
The seventh-month discussion gives Ding refinement and Jia support of Ding a leading role. Capable Geng can sustain useful Fire restraint. A roughly formed tool being finished to a required size captures the image: the purpose is suitable use, not completing a missing-element list.
In You, Geng has the monthly Yang Blade route, 阳刃. The book discusses Bing and Ding together, including Bing addressing increasing cold. Retain that monthly starting point before assessing Authority restraining the Blade and Wealth supporting Authority. Using Ding does not rename the month-command pattern Direct Officer.
A period supporting necessary Ding, with capable Geng, favors examinations, qualifications, and responsibility. Water damaging that Fire can introduce tension between expression and assessment. Where Fire is already excessive, effective Water may instead relieve pressure. The changed relationship determines the direction.
Winter warmth prepares the way for refinement
The twelfth-month passage begins with Bing addressing cold and wet Chou Earth, then Ding refinement and Jia supporting Fire. These are distinct tasks. One Fire stem cannot automatically perform the whole cooperation of the other. Rootless Fire under heavy Water still needs effective support.
A period giving Wood and Fire useful roots, without over-controlling Metal, directs attention to previously stalled capacity finding use. More Metal and Water damaging necessary Fire points toward preparation that struggles to become results.
For study and employment, prepare both skill and knowledge of the standards. In shared household or family work, define responsibilities and common expenditure. Spring examines cold and excessive Earth; summer examines supported Water; autumn examines proportionate restraint; winter examines the sequence of warmth and refinement. That is the seasonal reading of Geng.
