Read luck periods through the relationship they change

Read favorable and unfavorable influences through the relationships that a luck period actually changes.

休囚系乎运,尤系乎岁,战冲视其孰降,和好视其孰切。

— Di Tian Sui, “Luck Periods and Years”

Does a Wealth year mean more money? Does an Authority year mean promotion? This chapter asks a prior question: what does Wealth or Authority do in the original chart, and how do the incoming stems and branches change that function?

The chart describes needs and time introduces changes

The chapter compares the Day Master to the traveler, useful natal actors to companions and transport, a luck period to the place visited, and the year to a person encountered there. Ren Tieqiao explains that a period gives substantial importance to its branch but still requires examining its stem. The year's stem matters, but its branch cannot be discarded.

A luck period describes conditions across a stretch of time. An annual pillar adds that year's relationships. Read the natal chart, period, and year together: what generates or controls what, which root is clashed, and which stem becomes bound? Neither half of an incoming pillar gives the whole answer.

The same Wealth period can add income or obligations

Well rooted Jia with Bing Output feeding Wu Wealth may have capacity and an established route to income. More Earth Wealth then directs attention to business, earnings, and property. If peers simultaneously become stronger and Wealth loses protection, include competition and distribution rather than retaining only the favorable interpretation.

Poorly rooted Jia with already excessive Wealth may face more expenditure and responsibility when Earth arrives, particularly if Earth also feeds Geng Killings. Examine whether Resource and peers can support Jia or whether the Metal pressure can be effectively handled.

Authority works similarly. Useful Xin Officer protected through Wealth and Resource may support assessments and responsibility. Effective Ding Hurting Officer, 伤官, damaging Xin can instead create conflict between expression and rules, especially when no Resource restrains Ding and no Wealth transmits its force toward Officer. The career direction follows the cooperation, not the arrival of an Authority character.

Ask what clashes damage and what combinations bind

The verse asks which side gives way in conflict. Clashing with the Day Master's only useful root differs from disturbing an actor that blocks a necessary route. Unequal opponents also differ from two rooted forces capable of sustained conflict.

If Jia needs Yin and a Shen period clashes with it, inspect other Wood support and any Fire restraint of Shen Metal. Yin cannot simply be erased and the chart reread as rootless. Explain which existing function is weakened or changed.

For combinations, ask which actor is bound and whom that helps. Jia–Ji may draw Jia toward Wealth or limit a needed function. Bing–Xin binding Xin has a different meaning when Xin imposes excessive pressure from when Xin provides necessary Authority. A relationship is the first fact; removal and transformation require additional conditions.

A favorable period still contains different years

A chart with weak Resource and heavy Authority may gain a useful stretch of support when rooted Water Resource arrives. A year bringing Earth that damages Water, or a branch that disturbs its root, can reduce that support. A useful period does not make every year smooth.

Conversely, a difficult period can contain a helpful year. An annual actor may strengthen Output controlling Killings, supply Wealth's missing source, or release an important binding relationship. Whether that relief continues depends on roots and subsequent periods. A temporary improvement cannot establish permanent ease.

Life interpretation becomes clearer when it follows a specific relationship. Supported Officer and Resource direct attention to examinations, qualifications, and responsibilities. Supported Output and Wealth direct attention to work finding use and income. Intensified peer competition over Wealth directs attention to shared expenditure and property agreements in families or partnerships.

When conditions improve, establish which responsibilities and actual resources are available before expanding commitments. When pressure grows, reduce uncertain promises and record shared costs and handovers. A definite reading connects a natal need, an incoming action, and a relevant area of life. One Ten God label cannot responsibly describe an entire year.
