四墓者，冲气也，何以谓之杂气？以其所藏者多，用神不一，故谓之杂气也。如辰本藏戊，而又为水库，为乙余气，三者俱有，于何取用？然而甚易也，透干会支取其清者用之，杂而不杂也。

The Earth label does not settle the pattern

Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei are Earth branches, but their patterns cannot be decided simply by naming the Ten God associated with Earth. Shen's mixed qi discussion distinguishes principal qi, residual qi and stored qi through emergence and branch combinations.

Chen contains Wu, Yi and Gui; Xu contains Wu, Xin and Ding; Chou contains Ji, Gui and Xin; Wei contains Ji, Ding and Yi. Compare these exact stems with the day master before assigning Wealth, Officer, Resource or output. A branch cannot be called a Wealth or Officer storage without saying for which day master.

For Jia Wood in Chen month, Wu is Indirect Wealth, Gui Direct Resource and Yi Rob Wealth. Wu emerging supports a Wealth direction; Gui emerging supports Resource. Shen treats Yi through the monthly peer method. This does not create a new ordinary “mixed qi Rob Wealth pattern.”

Chen contains Gui, not Ren. Ren may appear as Resource and receive Water-storage support, but it is not exact emergence of a monthly hidden Ren. That distinction supplies the basis for judging which monthly qi becomes visible.

Emergence and combinations must point somewhere coherent

For Jia in Chen month, emerging Gui together with Shen and Zi creates a complete Shen-Zi-Chen Water combination. Both the visible stem and the combination support Resource. Shen-Chen or Zi-Chen alone cannot supply a missing member or automatically erase the original Earth direction.

When two hidden stems emerge, assess their relationship. Wealth and Resource can conflict; Officer can produce Resource. The day master's capacity, Resource's strength and any effective mediation still matter. Clarity means that the actors' functions are coherent, not that every actor except one has been removed.

Shen's statement that multiple emerging actors may be used does not make them equal in rank. Some lead, some assist, and some obstruct. Listing several pattern names without explaining their roles leaves the central question unanswered.

A complete mixed qi Officer example

In his commentary on Luck Periods for Direct Officer, Xu Lewu repeats a mixed qi Officer example with these pillars in year, month, day and hour order: Ren-Xu, Ding-Wei, Wu-Shen and Yi-Mao, 壬戌、丁未、戊申、乙卯.

Wu Earth is the day master. Wei contains Ji Rob Wealth, Ding Direct Resource and Yi Direct Officer. Ding emerges in the month stem and Yi in the hour stem. Yi has a root in Mao; Ding has roots in Wei and Xu. Ren Indirect Wealth appears in the year and has support in Shen, but Ren is not hidden in Wei.

Shen calls this a mixed qi Direct Officer pattern. Wei's principal Ji does not make it a Rob Wealth pattern, and Ding's position above the month branch does not automatically replace Officer with Resource. Yi's exact monthly emergence and Mao root provide clear evidence for the Officer line.

Shen then notes that Ren Wealth and Ding Resource combine, leaving Officer inadequately assisted. Xu Lewu's commentary also examines the effectiveness of those helpers. Naming the pattern does not establish its excellence. The Ding-Ren relationship is discussed through their assistance to Officer; it does not prove that every such encounter transforms into Wood.

Mao and Wei provide partial Wood-combination support, but Hai is absent. A complete Wood bureau should not be invented. Officer already has evidence through emerging Yi. Pattern identification and assessment of its functioning remain distinct steps.

Continue into the particular pattern's needs

Mixed qi Wealth requires a source, protection and a day master able to bear it. Mixed qi Resource requires effective support and examination of Wealth attacks. Mixed qi Officer requires assistance appropriate to its duties. The words “mixed qi” offer no separate shortcut to wealth or promotion.

A period can make a hidden stem visible or complete an existing combination. Explain which fact changes and what the new actor can do. A storage clash cannot substitute for emergence. Nor can a clash erase an emergence already present. It changes the effectiveness of roots and relationships, which must be assessed after the monthly facts are accurately established.
