成中有败,必是带忌;败中有成,全凭救应。
— Ziping Zhenquan, On Formation Damage and Rescue in the Useful God
Name the arrangement before judging damage
Wealth producing Officer does not settle formation, just as Hurting Officer attacking Officer does not settle the final outcome. Shen asks what disturbs the useful arrangement and whether another actor addresses that disturbance.
An unfavorable actor obstructs a function that the chart needs. Rescue removes, controls or redirects that obstruction. First identify the function intended to work; otherwise control cannot be distinguished as damage or help.
For Jia Wood in You month, Xin is Direct Officer. With Wealth supplying Xin and Jia sufficiently rooted, there is a viable authority line. Emerging Ding Hurting Officer then controls Xin. Wealth's production has not disappeared, but the useful Officer is under attack.
Gui Water Resource can control Ding and support Jia. It can rescue Officer if it has support and remains able to act. Floating Gui facing strongly rooted Ding cannot be treated as a completed remedy merely because Resource appears. The capacity to rescue must be established.
The remedy must address the specific problem
Resource helps in that example, but can create a problem elsewhere. For Jia in Shen month, Geng Killings may be restrained by Bing Eating God. Strong Ren Resource suppressing Bing removes the needed restraint. Adding more Resource now worsens the problem.
Wu Earth Wealth might control Ren and preserve Bing. Yet Wu also feeds Geng, and Bing can divert its production toward Wu. Assess whether preserving Eating God outweighs strengthening Killings, including position and effective strength. An actor with two functions cannot be described only through its helpful side.
When strong peers threaten light Wealth, Eating God can receive the peers' force and produce Wealth. When Wealth threatens light Resource, peers can control Wealth and preserve Resource. Wealth is protected in one case and restrained in the other. A remedy has no universally favorable name.
The life interpretation should locate the corresponding difficulty. Inadequate protection for Officer concerns duties, assessment and rules. Damage to productive output concerns delivery failing to become revenue. Wealth attacking needed Resource concerns commercial demands consuming preparation or support. Advice becomes useful when it addresses that particular link.
Having rescue differs from effective rescue
A rescue actor with roots and supply differs from one that is itself attacked, tied by a combination or disturbed in its branch support. The distinction is between a possible remedy and a remedy that can actually perform its task.
Return to Gui protecting Xin from Ding for a Jia day master. Wu appearing creates a Wu-Gui combination relationship. Seasonal support, roots, competing combinations and position must be examined before deciding whether Gui is tied. The mere presence of Wu and Gui does not erase Gui or prove transformation into Fire.
The decisive question is whether Gui can still control Ding. If it can, Officer retains protection. If it cannot, the earlier attack becomes effective again. Rescue can also fail to reach its target when other actors intervene. Having Wealth, output and Resource does not make them freely interchangeable remedies.
Formation and damage are therefore not an average of favorable and unfavorable labels. They concern whether the arrangement's essential link holds.
Luck periods can repair or reopen the weakness
If Ding is strong and Gui light, a period strengthening Gui's roots can improve the restraint. Heavy Earth suppressing Water can instead undermine Officer's protection. The period changes an existing relationship; it does not replace the natal chart.
A chart may lack rescue until a period supplies it. Water Resource can offer protection to attacked Officer, but not if the chart's strong Earth immediately prevents it from acting. State both what arrives and what it can do after arrival.
Officer protection translates into clear authority, documented work and agreed assessment standards. Protecting output that produces Wealth directs attention to delivery, acceptance and collection. Protecting Resource directs attention to training time and support that commercial demands must not exhaust.
Rescue need not be narrated as a dramatic reversal of fortune. A weak link becoming supported can make work more sustainable; a lost protection can make difficulties recur. The chapter's useful discipline is to identify the problem, the actor that can address it, and what still remains unresolved.
