Changes in the useful god When the monthly focus shifts
Follow how emergence and branch assemblies can change the use of the month command without erasing its original basis.

— Ziping Zhenquan, On Changes in the Useful God
The principal qi is a starting point
Beginning with the month branch does not mean freezing the pattern at its principal hidden stem. Shen's chapter on change asks which monthly qi emerges and whether a branch combination changes what leads the arrangement.
Shen contains Geng, Ren and Wu. For Ji Earth in Shen month, Geng is Hurting Officer, Ren Direct Wealth and Wu Rob Wealth. Geng establishes the initial direction. If Geng remains hidden and Ren emerges, there is a basis for moving the focus to Wealth. Ren also has a root in Shen; it is not an unrelated Wealth star appearing from nowhere.
Gui Water is different. Gui is Indirect Wealth for Ji and is not the Ren hidden in Shen. Its participation can be discussed, but the classical proposition “hidden Geng, emerging Ren” cannot simply be transferred to Gui.
Change does not erase Geng. It remains in Shen and can supply Wealth. What changes is the leading line of interpretation. One then asks whether output feeds Wealth, whether the day master can bear Wealth, and whether peers threaten it.
Complete combinations need all their members
For Ding Fire in Hai month, Ren is Direct Officer and Jia Direct Resource. When Hai, Mao and Wei are all present, Hai participates in a complete Wood combination. Shen describes a shift from Officer to Resource. The analysis moves toward Resource supporting the day master and its relationship with authority and output.
The stated basis is a complete Hai-Mao-Wei combination involving the month branch. Hai-Mao alone or Hai-Wei alone provides a partial relationship, not a missing third member. An isolated Mao should not automatically erase the original Officer direction.
A complete combination also needs examination where it is directly challenged. If You clashes with Mao, ask whether Wood retains effective support. Strong supported Wood facing a light clash differs from weak Wood facing strong Metal. Establish the members first, then assess the pressure on them.
The life emphasis follows the functioning relationship. Officer concerns duties, rules and position; Resource concerns training, credentials, documents and support. A shift toward Resource can be interpreted through pressure becoming preparation or assistance. If Resource is already excessive, however, attention turns to whether it can lead to useful output.
What makes a change favorable
Shen also discusses Gui Water in Yin month. Jia is Hurting Officer and Bing Direct Wealth. A complete Yin-Wu-Xu Fire combination, with Bing emerging, can move the focus from Hurting Officer to Wealth. Wu Earth Officer can then be examined through Wealth producing Officer rather than automatically applying the earlier Hurting Officer judgment.
For Bing Fire in Yin month, Jia is Indirect Resource. With Jia hidden and Yin-Wu-Xu forming Fire, Shen describes Resource changing toward peers. The day master's own element becomes stronger, so the question is how that force can be released or controlled.
A favorable change should explain which previous difficulty is resolved. An unfavorable change should explain which previous support is lost. A new pattern name alone supplies neither explanation. The actors' functions and their requirements have to change with the reading.
The original pattern can survive apparent change
For Bing in Yin month with Wu and Xu present, Shen gives preservation cases when Jia or Ren emerges. Jia gives the monthly Resource a visible expression. Ren can support Jia and restrain Fire, preserving a Resource line. Their ability to act must be examined; the presence of three Fire-combination branches should not automatically settle every case.
Emergence and combinations therefore need to be considered together. A secondary hidden stem emerging while the principal qi stays hidden differs from principal qi also emerging with effective support. Confusing the two creates repeated changes of label without an intelligible reason.
A luck period raises the same questions. Does Wu or Xu complete an existing combination? Does Jia make a previously hidden Resource visible? Is that new actor tied by a combination or attacked? Explain the relationship that changes first, then interpret its effect on responsibilities, resources or the source of income. The purpose of this chapter is to keep judgment responsive to the actual arrangement.
