Wealth needs a source and protection

Why can a Wealth star help one chart and disturb another? Shen Xiaozhan's “direct use” describes what a particular arrangement needs. It does not make every appearance of Wealth, Officer, Resource or Eating God favorable.

For a Jia Wood day master, Bing Fire is Eating God and Earth is Wealth. Jia produces Bing, which produces Earth. Ability can be read through this sequence as work that becomes an output and then income. Jia needs roots strong enough to sustain that expenditure, and Bing must remain able to act. If Ren Water suppresses Bing, the route to Wealth is interrupted.

“Producing Officer to protect Wealth” adds a different function. When strong Wood peers threaten light Earth Wealth, Xin Metal Officer can restrain them. Earth supplies Xin; Xin protects Earth by controlling Wood. This works only if Officer can perform that restraint and the day master can bear its pressure. A weak Wealth star exhausted by feeding Officer does not automatically benefit.

The practical emphasis follows the relationship. Eating God producing Wealth concerns delivery, products and services becoming revenue. Officer protecting Wealth concerns enforceable agreements and clear responsibilities. When peer competition increases and Officer cannot contain it, ownership, payment terms and profit sharing deserve attention.

Officer and Resource need different kinds of help

For Jia, Xin is Direct Officer, Ji Earth can produce Xin, and Water Resource can restrain Ding Fire Hurting Officer. If Ding is attacking Xin, Resource protects Officer by controlling Ding. Heavy Earth might feed Xin while also damaging the Water that protects it. Both actions must be considered.

With Metal between Earth and Water, the sequence can continue from Wealth to Officer to Resource. When Wealth directly attacks Resource, and Resource is the only protection for Officer, the conflict has to be resolved. In life interpretation, this points to responsibilities, qualifications and the ability to defend one's work under scrutiny.

With Resource as the monthly focus, the roles change. Metal supplies Water; Wood peers can restrain Earth Wealth that threatens Water. Peers that endanger Wealth in one arrangement may therefore protect Resource in another. The useful question is what they protect here.

Resource can be interpreted through education, training, documents and support. If light Resource is attacked by Wealth while the day master is weak, examine how that support is being depleted. If Resource and the day master are already strong, adding more Resource may obstruct the need to produce something useful. Support should address a shortage.

A complete example of Eating God producing Wealth

Eating God is produced by the day master, so it first needs a dependable source. Wealth can receive its output and can also restrain Indirect Resource that suppresses it. If Eating God is instead restraining Seven Killings, however, Wealth feeding Killings may undermine the arrangement. The favorable use of Wealth belongs to the particular task Eating God performs.

In On Eating God, Shen gives the example attributed to Xie Gelao. In year, month, day and hour order, the pillars are Ji-Wei, Ren-Shen, Wu-Zi and Geng-Shen: 己未、壬申、戊子、庚申.

Wu Earth is the day master. Shen contains Geng Eating God, Ren Indirect Wealth and Wu peer. Geng appears in the hour stem and Ren in the month stem, so both come from the month branch. The two Shen branches root Geng. Ren has a root in Shen, and Zi supports Water Wealth. Wu has roots in Wei and Shen, with Ji in the year also supporting Earth. The sequence is visible: Wu produces Geng, and Geng produces Ren.

Shen places this example under Eating God producing Wealth. Xu Lewu's commentary emphasizes the monthly Geng and the connected Wealth. Shen and Zi are only two members of a Water combination; the chart has no Chen completing Shen-Zi-Chen. Nor should Ji be condemned merely because its label is Rob Wealth. It supports the day master, and Geng receives Earth's output.

The example teaches a sequence: the capacity to bear expenditure, a functioning output, and Wealth receiving that output. A period adding Wealth without helping the day master can increase depletion. Resource suppressing Eating God can obstruct the conversion of work into income. Practical development therefore includes staffing, delivery time and payment collection alongside technical skill.

Follow the arrangement that actually exists

Before welcoming another favorable-sounding star, identify the task it performs. Does Officer need feeding? Is Resource protecting Officer from an active attack? Are peers preserving threatened Resource? Is Wealth restraining the Resource that suppresses Eating God?

Direct use supports these particular needs. More of something already excessive, or an attack on the only protection, changes the judgment. The star's contribution matters more than its reassuring name.
