Begin with the month command

A chart contains Wealth, Officer, Resource and Output. Which should you examine first? Shen Xiaozhan starts with the month command, 月令.

In this passage, 用神, often translated as the useful god, establishes the focus for reading the pattern. First identify what leads in the month; then examine how the other stems and branches work with it. The discussion of supporting or regulating a pattern follows from that starting point.

The month command is the branch of the Month Pillar. If the branch is Yin 寅, begin with Yin; if it is You 酉, begin with You. Month Pillars change at the relevant solar terms, rather than at the start of a numbered lunar month.

The Day Stem, or Day Master, is the reference for the Ten Gods. What generates it is Resource; what it generates is Output; what it controls is Wealth; what controls it is Officer or Seven Killings. Its own element forms the Peer group. Yin and yang distinguish the individual roles within these relationships.

Take Jia 甲 Wood. In You 酉 month, Xin 辛 Metal controls Jia and has the opposite polarity: it is Direct Officer 正官. In Shen 申 month, the principal hidden stem Geng 庚 Metal also controls Jia, but shares its yang polarity: it is Seven Killings 七杀. Both involve Metal controlling Wood, yet the next question changes. How is the Officer supported and protected? How is Seven Killings regulated?

This identifies the principal relationship in the month. Visible hidden stems, combinations, and the Lu or Rob Wealth routes can alter how the pattern is selected. They are the next steps in the reading.

Support what sustains the pattern

Shen groups Wealth, Officer, Resource and Eating God 食神 under 顺用, working by support and protection. Wealth needs a source; Officer needs support; Resource needs to be nourished and protected from damaging Wealth; Eating God needs the Day Master to sustain it and protection from disruptive Indirect Resource.

Shen continues:

财喜食神以相生，生官以护财；官喜透财以相生，生印以护官。

In a Wealth-led pattern, Eating God generating Wealth describes a source of income. Think of a craft becoming a finished product and the product earning revenue. To apply that relationship to a chart, examine whether the Day Master can sustain the demand, whether Eating God is impaired, and whether Peers are taking away Wealth.

If the Day Master's roots and support are sufficient, Eating God is effective, and Wealth is protected, luck cycles can be read through the development of work and income. A cycle that strengthens the productive relationship directs attention to business and earnings. A cycle that introduces unregulated competition for Wealth directs attention to divided proceeds, disputed shares and difficulty retaining money. The practical response follows the reading: improve the work, manage payments, and agree contributions and profit sharing before entering a partnership.

In an Officer-led pattern, the emphasis shifts to appointments, standards and reputation. Wealth can generate Officer. Resource protects Officer when it restrains Hurting Officer 伤官, which would otherwise attack it. Wealth must also avoid damaging that protective Resource.

With a clear, effective Officer, a Day Master able to carry its demands, and the supporting relationships intact, a helpful cycle is read through appointments, assessments, qualifications and increased responsibility. In working life, that points toward building recognised skills, documenting responsibilities and meeting the standards of the role.

Regulate what needs restraint or redirection

逆用 concerns the relationships that regulate Seven Killings, Hurting Officer, Month Rob Wealth 月劫 and Yang Blade 阳刃. Eating God restrains Seven Killings; Resource restrains Hurting Officer, or Wealth receives its output. Month Rob Wealth can be regulated by Officer, or redirected through Eating God toward Wealth. Officer and Seven Killings can restrain Yang Blade.

For Jia Wood, Geng Metal is Seven Killings and Bing 丙 Fire is Eating God. Bing controls Geng. When Geng places substantial pressure on Jia, Bing can restrain it effectively, and Jia has roots to carry the relationship, the reading follows Eating God controlling Seven Killings.

The life theme is handling demanding work, competition and responsibility. Effective restraint directs attention to competence under pressure. Heavy Seven Killings with insufficient Eating God directs attention to demands exceeding the available skills or support. Before accepting a harder role, build the capability and resources it requires.

When the month leads through Hurting Officer, Shen gives two routes: Resource controlling it, and Wealth receiving its output. For Jia, Ding 丁 Fire is Hurting Officer. Water Resource can control Fire and generate Wood; Earth Wealth can receive Fire's production. The first route draws attention to training and discipline; the second to talent, technique and expression earning a return. Their suitability depends on the relative strength and actual effectiveness of the participants.

In an Officer-led chart, Ding attacking Xin is a different relationship. Without Resource to restrain Ding or Wealth to carry its output onward to Officer, that attack disrupts the pattern. The reading then examines appointments, assessments, rules and conflict with authority. Communicate objections carefully and keep clear records of responsibilities and promises.

Read what a luck cycle changes

A cycle is read by asking which part of the established relationship it supports or damages. Does productive Output still reach Wealth? Does Officer retain its support and protection? Does Eating God still balance Seven Killings?

Support that was missing in the original chart arriving in a cycle has a different meaning from existing protection being damaged. The chart establishes the conditions; the cycle changes them. That sequence gives the life interpretation its direction.
