The theory of Bazi and the Five Elements shares the same source and flows in the same channel as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory; both are built upon the philosophical foundation of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Understanding the Five Elements and human health from a TCM perspective helps us more deeply grasp the internal logic of Bazi destiny analysis, because many of the judgment principles in destiny analysis directly borrow from TCM's understanding of the relationship between the human body and the natural environment.
TCM holds that the human body is a small universe, mutually resonating and corresponding with the greater external universe. Each of the Five Elements corresponds to specific internal organs, tissues, emotions, and sensory organs of the human body. Wood corresponds to the liver and gallbladder; Fire corresponds to the heart and small intestine; Earth corresponds to the spleen and stomach; Metal corresponds to the lungs and large intestine; Water corresponds to the kidneys and bladder. This correspondence is not arbitrary association but a functional analogy based on long-term clinical practice and observation.
Wood governs generation and upward movement; the liver governs free coursing and discharge—both possess the qualities of extension and smooth flow. When liver Qi is unobstructed, the body's Qi and blood circulate freely, and emotions remain peaceful. When liver Qi stagnates, symptoms such as chest and rib-side distension and emotional depression easily arise. In Bazi destiny analysis, if a person's Wood element is too weak or excessively restricted by Metal, the analyst will often remind that person to pay attention to liver and gallbladder health and to guard against emotional problems. This is not superstition but a reasonable inference based on the correspondence of the Five Elements.
Fire governs warmth; the heart governs blood and vessels—both possess the functions of warming and propulsion. When heart fire is vigorous, the complexion is ruddy and thinking is agile. When heart fire is excessively hyperactive, symptoms such as mouth sores and insomnia with irritability may appear. A person with strong Fire in their Bazi chart tends to have an outgoing, enthusiastic personality but is also prone to impulsiveness. Destiny analysis infers a person's temperament and health tendencies by analyzing the strength and balance of Fire in the chart.
Earth governs transformation and transportation; the spleen governs digestion and absorption—both possess the functions of bearing and transforming. When the Earth element is robust, the body is strong and muscles are full. When the Earth element is weak, indigestion and muscle wasting easily occur. In Bazi, Earth is called "the mother of all things" because it can bear and nurture the other four elements. A person with a balanced Earth element in their chart tends to have a steady, inclusive personality and relatively balanced physical health.
Metal governs astringing and descending; the lungs govern respiration—both possess the qualities of clearing and contracting. When Metal Qi is sufficient, breathing is smooth and skin is moist. When Metal Qi is deficient, coughing, shortness of breath, and dry skin easily occur. A person with strong Metal in their chart tends to have a resolute, decisive character but may also be overly cold and lacking in warmth. In destiny analysis, Metal is also closely related to wealth, because Metal itself carries the imagery of preciousness and the accumulation of wealth.
Water governs moistening and downward flow; the kidneys govern the storage of essence—both possess the functions of nourishing and sealing. When kidney Qi is abundant, energy is vigorous and memory is strong. When kidney Qi is deficient, symptoms such as weak waist and knees and premature aging easily occur. In Bazi, Water represents wisdom and fluidity. A person with strong Water usually has flexible thinking and adapts well to change but may also lack stability and drift with the current.
TCM emphasizes "treating pre-disease"—preventing illness before it occurs. Bazi destiny analysis likewise possesses an early warning function. By analyzing the depletion and imbalance of the Five Elements in a person's chart, one can provide advance notice of health issues that may arise at specific ages or during specific seasons. For example, a person with weak Wood encountering a Major Luck cycle dominated by Metal should especially take care of their liver and gallbladder during autumn when Metal energy is at its peak. This approach of combining temporal rhythms with human health is precisely the extension of TCM's "correspondence between heaven and human" concept into the realm of destiny analysis.
